BLESSING OF UNITY

The song of ascents or ascent is attributed to King David in (Psalm 133) expressing the beauty and blessing of unity among God’s people.  It is a declaration of the goodness of living together in unity and compares this unity to precious, anointed, or Holy oil that is poured on the head of a High Priest, (Aaron) that flows down his beard and garments.  Meant to be a song of encouragement and a call to unity among the Israelites.  A reminder of the importance of unity and the positive impact it can have on the community and the work of God.

Mount Hermon, a mountain range located in present-day Lebanon, near the border of Syria, the highest peak in the region is mentioned in the passage.  The dew of Hermon is symbolic of the refreshing and life-giving blessings that come from above.  In the aforementioned verse, it describes the abundant blessings and favor of the Lord that descends upon HIS people when they live together in unity.  The Bible tells us that, it’s as if the dew of Hermon were falling upon Mount Zion, which is located in Jerusalem, Israel where the City of David and the Temple were situated.  Zion is often mentioned in the Bible, especially relating to God’s presence and holds significance in Jewish history and worship.

Although both Mount Hermon and Mount Zion are mentioned in Scripture, they refer to distinct and separate locations with different historical and religious significance.  One mountain peak is where God’s refreshing life-giving blessings come from above, and the other is where the Israelites ascend to Jerusalem, because it is situated on a hill, and they made their annual pilgrimage for Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles.  As they made their ascent, they sung Psalms that expressed Joy and anticipation, for the unity of worshippers, as they journeyed to the Holy City, gathered in the presence of God.

May the oil of God’s blessings, drip down from my head, and like Aaron over my beard down to my garments, and flow over my possessions, in the name of Jesus.

This oil anoints, heals, restores, and consecrate, body, mind, and spirit, those whose households ward off evil and are their Divinely protected refuge.  Set apart as sanctuaries with a special role and Divine purpose.  Where we spend the second half of our lives, healing from the first half.

God, please bestow favor upon and give power to those who glorify YOUR name.  We ask YOU God, invoke intervention, provide comfort and renewal to our body, mind, and spirit, as we unify as One Body.  Unite us Lord, and bestow YOUR blessings on those of us who do YOUR will, even life forevermore. AMEN

Psalm 133
New International Version
Psalm 133
A song of ascents. Of David.

1 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!

It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.”

Psalm 133
King James Version

133 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.”

Psalm 133
Living Bible

133 “How wonderful it is, how pleasant, when brothers live in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the fragrant anointing oil that was poured over Aaron’s head and ran down onto his beard and onto the border of his robe. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew on Mount Hermon, on the mountains of Israel. And God has pronounced this eternal blessing on Jerusalem, even life forevermore.”
