POWER OF TOUCH

Let us explore the human need for connection and comfort.  Most adults feel sad and alone when their spouse leaves or dies; it is called grief and loneliness.  Losing a loved one can be tough.  People often feel sad and empty.  Anyone grieving should seek help from family, friends, or professionals to deal with their sadness.

Humans want to touch and be touched for many reasons.  Touch is a way to show feelings and can express many emotions without words.  It can provide physical and emotional comfort, reduce anxiety and stress as well as promote feelings of connection and intimacy.  Also, touch is important for development of social bonds, especially in infancy and early childhood.  In adults it creates a sense of community and support.

The word “touch” can be defined as “the sense of physical contact between objects or living beings.”  It plays a role in sensual attraction, touch is a low intensity stimulation, it releases hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, both associated with feelings of pleasure and attachment.  We humans are provided information about texture, temperature, and other sensory properties through touch.  Through hugs and handshakes, touch communicates emotion, intention, or feelings of well-being.

A person, who is grouchy or mean, are likely so due to their personality, life experiences, and/or current circumstances.  In same way that living alone does not necessarily make a person grouchy or mean.  Many enjoy living alone, finding it peaceful and fulfilling, while others may find it lonely and isolating.  Although, social isolation can have a negative impact on one’s mental and emotional health, so that makes it important to stay connected with others, and seek support if needed.

The Bible does not specifically address the issue of physical touch as a means of connecting to God, however, it does offer guidance on seeking a deeper connection with HIM. (James 4:8) Encourages us to seek God and draw closer to HIM and HE will draw close to us. (Hebrews 4:16) We are instructed to come boldly to God in prayer and seek HIS wisdom in our lives.

Physical touch is not explicitly stated, however, it is our Christian understanding that God is always with us and desires a close, personal relationship with us.  When we seek that relationship through prayer, study HIS Word; we are abiding in HIS presence.
