The coexistence of confidence and humility has been a debated topic with some contending that such coexistence is impossible. However, biblical literature suggests that true confidence often emanates from humble roots. To be humble is to acknowledge one’s limitations and fallibility, without disregarding the potential for growth or dismissing one’s unique capabilities. Accordingly, humility stimulates personal growth and development by emphasizing learning and openness to guidance rather than a stagnant conceit.
Holy Scripture tells us to have confidence in God and HIS promises. (Psalm 118:8-9) Says, “it is better to trust in the Lord than put confidence in man.” (Philippians 4:13), Paul says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Through faith in God and HIS power, Christians can have confidence to face any situation.
In finding this balance we thereby find ways to acknowledge flaws for our own personal growth. There are many benefits of being humble yet confident. One of those ways is an increased self-awareness. It allows us to have a realistic view of our strengths and weaknesses. Humility and confidence make us more approachable and likable. With this balance, we are able to connect with people on a deeper level while being open to feedback and constructive criticism. Making us more resilient, and setbacks and failures do not deter as much. By learning from our mistakes we are given an ability to bounce back quickly from them.
But first, we must build a new kind of trust and respect over those we lead. Achieving goals is possible while still maintaining positive relationships with others. The art of balancing confidence and humility is a skillful and delicate counterbalance.
