HOLY REBUKE

“When confrontation becomes communion there’s a Holy Rebuke”

By grace and truth we walk, not only in comfort but also often in confrontation. In a world that exalts tolerance above truth, the question arises for the follower of Christ: “If we rebut man, is that considered a Holy act by God?” The answer is neither found in a simple yes nor no, but in the sacred tension where love and truth kiss (Psalm 85:10). The rebuttal of man, when done in the Spirit and in alignment with the Word, is not merely a human reaction, it becomes a Holy act, a Divine participation in God’s righteousness.

The Model of Christ: Truth in Love:

Consider our Lord Jesus Christ. Was HE not the ultimate Rebutter of men’s flawed ideologies, empty religion, and hardened hearts? HE called the Pharisees “whitewashed tombs” (Matthew 23:27), rebuked Peter with, “Get behind me, Satan!” (Matthew 16:23), and turned over tables in the temple (John 2:15). Yet in all of these, HE sinned not. Why? Because every rebuttal HE gave was saturated with Holy intent: to bring man out of darkness into light, out of error into truth, out of pride into repentance. Thus, to rebut man, to resist lies, confront sin, or correct folly, is not unholy when it is done in the Spirit of Christ. The motivation must not be pride or vengeance, but love rooted in truth. It is not rebuttal that makes the act holy or unholy, but the spirit in which it is done.

Call to Holy Correction:

The Scriptures themselves call the believer to the sacred task of correction: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” (2 Timothy 4:2) “Better is open rebuke than hidden love.” (Proverbs 27:5). “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.” (Luke 17:3) Each of these rebukes is not a breaking down, but a building up. They are not reactions to offense, but responses to error. In this, we see that Holy rebuttal is a form of discipleship, a means by which God refines HIS people, not with a hammer to destroy, but with a chisel to shape.

The Spirit of the Rebuttal: Meekness and Wisdom:

Even when truth is on our side, our spirit must still be under the governance of the Holy Spirit. As Paul instructed, “And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness.” (2 Timothy 2:24-25) The Holiness of the act is not just in the correctness of the content, but in the Christlikeness of the conduct. Therefore, to rebut man becomes a Holy act when it mirrors the heart of God, a heart that is jealous for truth, patient with the wayward, merciful to the remorseful, and always rooted in love. To confront falsehood in another is to say, “I care too much for you to let you walk toward destruction unchallenged.” When we silence ourselves in the face of error, not out of humility but cowardice, we fail not just men, but God. Silence, when truth is needed, is complicity. But speech, when truth is honored and love is present, is sanctified action. Amen
