“The Light That Stands Still” — A Sermon for the Set Free

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14). May we kindly ask for a moment of your time? There is a kind of light that does not need to shout. It doesn’t chase attention. It doesn’t bend to be accepted. It simply stands, still. That light, is you, redeemed by Christ, born again, and made whole by the blood of the Lamb. Not because of your own merit, but because God, being rich in mercy, saw fit to call you out of darkness into HIS marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). But listen now, not everyone will honor that light. Some only loved you when they could use you. They liked the broken version of you, the version that said “yes” to everything, that didn’t know their worth in Christ. But the season of survival is over. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). The cycle is broken. The debt is settled, because Jesus paid it all. You don’t owe your presence to people who left you in the pit. Those who walked away when you were low, Those who betrayed you while you were bleeding, They don’t deserve access now that you’ve been made whole. Let them go. Jesus did not beg Judas to stay. This isn’t about bitterness. This is about boundaries, and Biblical wisdom. (Proverbs 4:23) says, “Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” Not everyone who had a seat at your table in the past gets a plate in your future. Now, hear me carefully: To refuse the call of God on your life, to play small so others feel comfortable, is to decline Divine authority. And as Plato once said (and echoed in Scripture through many examples), “The heaviest penalty for declining to rule is being ruled by someone inferior.” Plato is warning that if the wise and just do not lead, the foolish and unjust will. Remember King Saul, chosen, but disobedient. David had to rise because Saul fell. God’s calling is not a suggestion. It is a summons. So no, beloved, there is no going back. You are not returning to Egypt after walking through the Red Sea. You are not putting your hand back to the plow and looking behind you (Luke 9:62). You are free. Whom the SON sets free is free indeed (John 8:36). Walk in that freedom. Shine in that stillness. Stand in that authority. Let your light expose, just by being. Not everyone will like it. But Jesus didn’t die for you to be liked. HE died for you to be transformed. Let us pray: Lord, thank YOU for breaking cycles, for closing chapters, and for settling debts. Thank YOU that in YOU, we are whole, called, chosen, and filled with light. Teach us to guard our hearts, walk in wisdom, and never go back to the places YOU rescued us from. In Jesus’ name, Amen
