What will be the legacy that you leave behind?
In today’s world, digital platforms allow us to promote ourselves in ways never seen, the question arises: How should we present ourselves to the world, and how will we be remembered when our time on earth is done? This question carries weight, for it is not just about the fleeting impressions we leave, but the lasting record we create of our lives and faith.
We must be careful of how we present ourselves publicly—whether through social media posts, videos, podcasts, or any form of public communication. It’s easy to get swept up in the rush of likes, shares, and instant validation, but the reality is, this world is temporary, and so are the things we post. What will remain? What will stand the test of time?
In the grand scheme of eternity, our time on earth is but a brief moment. Our digital presence, however, has the potential to endure much longer. A single post, video, or message could outlive us, impacting others long after we’ve gone.
Given this reality, the question we must ask ourselves is: What kind of legacy are we leaving behind? Are we promoting the things that matter most, or are we getting lost in promoting ourselves and the fleeting things of this world?
Promote What Survives Time:
As Christians, we are called to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth (Matthew 6:19-21). The things of this world are temporary, but the things of God are eternal. Our lives should reflect the values and principles of the Kingdom of God. This means our public record—the things we share, promote, and invest time in—should align with the truth of the gospel.
What we promote now—whether through social media or in person—should reflect what is most important: God’s love, truth, and salvation. Are we promoting the gospel? Are we sharing hope, love, and faith in a way that will echo into eternity? Our actions and words, whether public or private, should reflect the values of the Kingdom we represent.
Ultimately, the legacy we leave behind is not about us—it’s about God’s glory. Jesus taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). This prayer is a reminder that our lives should be centered on God’s will and HIS glory. We should be intentional about how we live, speak, and share, ensuring that it points back to HIM.
The digital footprint we leave behind is part of the record we create while here on earth. Will that record testify to your commitment to Christ and HIS mission? Will it show that you lived for HIS glory and HIS purposes? It’s worth considering now because what you promote today could be the final message you leave behind.
As we ponder our legacy, remember what Paul declares, he fought the good fight and finished the race (2 Timothy 4:7-8). Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for HIS appearing.
The record you leave behind, whether digital or otherwise, matters. It is a reflection of how you lived and what you valued.
